BFSG check
Quick accessibility check (BFSG/WCAG 2.2) of a website.
How this tool works
The BFSG check performs an automated accessibility test per WCAG 2.2 Level AA. Since June 2025, many digital products and services in Germany must be accessible (BFSG). The tool finds common issues like missing alt texts, missing form labels, insufficient contrast and missing landmarks.
Typical use cases
- Check own website against the BFSG requirements
- After accessibility fixes, verify issues are resolved
- Web agencies: audit client websites for WCAG compliance
- Regular accessibility monitoring
Frequently asked questions
What is the BFSG?
The Barrierefreiheitsstärkungsgesetz implements the European Accessibility Act (EAA) in German law. Since 28 June 2025, many digital products and B2C services must be accessible. The act itself does not name a WCAG version: the presumption of conformity runs via the harmonised standard EN 301 549, which references WCAG. This check tests against WCAG 2.2 Level AA — the stricter version, which includes WCAG 2.1 Level AA.
Does this test cover all WCAG criteria?
No — automated tests detect only part of the WCAG criteria. Semantics, keyboard navigation, screen reader compatibility and cognitive barriers require manual testing.
Which engine is used?
If available, axe-core (Deque) in a headless browser. Fallback: heuristic HTML analysis with the most important checkpoints.
What does a score of 100 mean?
No automatically detectable violations. This does NOT mean the site is fully accessible — only that automatable tests pass.
What are the most common issues?
Missing alt attributes on images, missing labels on form elements, insufficient color contrast and missing language declaration (html lang).
How often should you test?
After every major deployment and at least once per quarter. Accessibility can break through content changes, new plugins or theme updates.
