Data center or residential?

Detects whether an IP comes from a data center/hosting network (likely server/bot) or a residential line (likely real visitor) — incl. cloud provider and ASN.

An IP address, for example 1.1.1.1. Leave empty to check your own address.

How this tool works

This check answers a single, very practical question: does an IP come from a data center or hosting network — so likely a server or bot — or from a residential/consumer line, so likely a real visitor? To do so it evaluates the data-center and hosting flags, the detected cloud provider, the connection type plus ASN and provider. This helps separate automated traffic from human traffic. The classification is based on open network data and is a hint, not proof. An empty field checks your own IP.

Typical use cases

  • Clean analytics: separate server/bot traffic from data centers from real visitors
  • On form spam, check whether the sender IP comes from a hosting network
  • Before throttling an IP, distinguish a cloud crawler from a residential customer
  • Classify suspicious logins — a residential line looks different from a hosters server IP
  • Identify the cloud provider behind a conspicuous IP (factual data from the ASN)

Frequently asked questions

How is data center distinguished from residential?

Via the ASN and known address ranges: hosting providers and cloud platforms operate clearly attributed networks, while consumer lines run over ISPs access networks. This mapping is quite reliable but not proof in a single case.

Does data center automatically mean bot?

No. Legitimate services, preview crawlers, link checkers and corporate proxies also run from data centers. The flag means "non-residential", not "malicious". It is a hint for further assessment.

Why is a cloud provider shown?

If the IP belongs to a known cloud network, we report the provider as factual data — this helps gauge from which infrastructure a request originates. This is neutral result information, not a recommendation.

What is the connection type?

A coarse classification of the connection, such as residential, cellular, business or hosting. It complements the data-center flags and helps avoid mislabeling mobile users as servers.

Are entered IPs stored?

No. The query happens in memory and is not stored for tracking purposes. No cookies; our own cookieless reach measurement records no values you enter.

Is this suitable for large-scale bot filtering?

For spot checks yes. For continuous, automated filtering across many requests we recommend the authenticated XICTRAQ platform with its own geo API, history and limits rather than this public spot-check page.
